Haiti - FLASH : A mysterious smell of oil in Port-de-Paix

Monday, the geologist engineer Claude Prépetit, Director of the Bureau of Mines and Energy (BME), said that according to information circulating on social networks, the inhabitants of Paulin / Lacorne, 6th section of Port-de-Paix, would have identified early this month, a smell of oil in a freshwater hole dug near the sea.

In order to verify this information, the BME sent to the scene Sunday, February 4, a team of technicians who after a summary analysis of the samples taken in the suspect hole and in various other holes dug on the coastline, did not find any traces of oil.

However, the BME and the National Directorate of Drinking Water (DINEPA) will jointly continue investigations to determine if the water in the area actually contains a foreign substance, which could represent a danger for human consumption

As a result, the BME and DINEPA are asking the inhabitants of the region to remain calm until the competent institutions make the final results of the investigation public.
