Haiti - FLASH weather : Threat of floods and landslides

Wednesday, given expected rain accumulations over our different watersheds during the next 4 days, the Hydro Meteorological Unit (UHM), together with the Permanent Secretariat for Risk Management (SPGRD) and the Directorate of Civil Protection DPC, has launched a flood, landslide and landslide warning due to persistent rains in Haiti and calls on residents of risk areas to remain vigilant and follow the usual safety instructions.

In its bulletin the UHM explains that a humid and unstable environment characterizes the meteorological situation of the Greater Antilles, whereas a cold front is on Cuba and a surface trough was developing to the north of the Dominican Republic in Wednesday morning.

The UHM specifies that these phenomena will cause significant rainy activities in some parts of the territory for the next 72 hours and especially Friday. Haiti began to receive thunderstorms on Wednesday afternoon and early evening. Rainfall will be more intense especially in the Southeast, West and Artibonite.

The DPC requires people in areas at risk of flooding, rockfall and landslides, especially those living near the gullies, streams of water or other flood-prone areas, to remain vigilant and invites them to regularly monitor all the weather information while ignoring the rumors, but also to place their papers and important affairs above the level that the waters could reach, or if possible upstairs. Those living in high-risk areas near a gully, water stream or beach should make arrangements to move to housing or shelter that is less exposed to flooding.
