Haiti - Training : Learning to build better

As part of the Natural Hazard Resilience Support Project, implemented in the North and North-East Departments by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), with funding from the Japanese Government in support of the Haitian state, close to 130 women and men from different construction trades participate in the Professional School of Cap-Haitien, to continuous training sessions (June 4-29) on seismic construction standards. These trainings are given by the trainers and members of the municipal engineering unit of the town halls of Cap-Haïtien, Milot, Grande Rivière du Nord, Trou-du-Nord and Ouanaminthe.

These sessions, based on reinforcement, carpentry and light roofing techniques, retaining walls, concrete and masonry in general, are designed to provide building construction technicians with essential tools for durable and durable construction.

The project also aims at strengthening the capacities of the National Risk and Disaster Management System in terms of preparedness, emergency response at the central and decentralized level and the resilience of vulnerable communities in construction.

"I am very excited about the opportunity offered by UNDP to recycle and gain new knowledge in seismic construction. This will allow me, in my turn, to share these new skills with my learners in my next classes," said Fania Finfin, a young trainer, during the workshop who said she was ready to make all the masons of her entourage aware of the behaviors responsible by requiring those who want to build a house to opt for constructions that meet quality standards.
