This week, at the request of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Embassy of Taiwan (Republic of China) in Haiti via the Rice Seed Production Capacity Building Project in Haiti (RECAPSRIH) organized in Déseaux (Artibonite), a distribution of 400 tons of TCS 10 rice seeds, (± 11,000 bags) worth more than 10 million gourdes.

Recall that RECAPSRIH was initiated in 2014 for a period of 5 years, financed by the Taiwanese government with a counterpart of the Haitian government, based on the production of quality rice seeds. For Jean Robert Jean Noël, representative of the Ministry of Agriculture, this cooperation consists of putting 120,000 hectares of land into production, of which 70,000 are rice fields each year.

According to agronomist Jean Willy Jean Baptiste, no less than 140,000 bags of seed of 80 pounds would be required to sow 70,000 hectares, at the rate of 2 bags per hectare.

After 210 years of independence, Haiti still struggles to feed its population still importing more than 50% of its food including 80% of its rice needs, which represents 30% of the basket of the housewife. According to the Ministry of Agriculture Haiti produces 100,000 metric tons of rice a year and imports an additional 400,000 tons to meet the food needs of the population.
