Haiti - Elections : Budget envelope of more than 651M gourdes for the CEP

In the draft budget law 2018-2019, the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) has a total envelope of just over 651 million gourdes for its operation confirmed Leopold Berlanger, the President of the CEP, who wishes a upward adjustment so that it can finally pay on time, the salaries of the staff of the Departmental Electoral Offices (BED) and the Municipal Electoral Offices (BEC).

In addition, Berlanger points out that this budget includes an amount of 45 million for investments on the 205 million requested, a first in the history of the CEP.

Berlanger specifies that the budget of 651 million included in the law of finance 2018-2019 do not include the costs of the elections of October 2019 (renewal of deputies and 1/3 of the Senate), which will be the subject of a separate budget, already in the hands of the Ministry of Finance.

Regarding the draft electoral law, he said it should be ready soon, adding that consultations will be planned between the CEP and all sectors concerned. Currently the CEP is finalizing the electoral calendar before working on the draft rules of procedure of the CEP.

In the absence so far of representatives appointed by the 3 powers of the State for the future Permanent Electoral Council, the current Electoral Council will continue to work until the establishment of a permanent Council, said Berlanger.
