Haiti - Security : Haiti strengthens security at the border of Belladère

Following the border incident of 18 August at the border crossing of Carrizal (Elías Piña Province) and Belladère (Central Dept., Haiti), which resulted to 6 wounded by bullets on the Haitian side https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-25284-haiti-flash-military-confrontation-at-the-border-at-least-7-victims.html , Gyler C. Delva, the resigning Minister of Communication, announced that the Government had taken measures to strengthen security in the region and reduce recurring conflicts between the people of Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

According to Minister Delava, more police are present at Belladère, which contributes in addition to the security of the Haitian population, to also fight against smuggling at the border which is losing the Haitian Public Treasury millions of dollars of tax revenue.

Delva also stated that a Commission had been set up to investigate these events and that the Commission is working with the Dominican authorities to see how to solve the border problems.

Still according to the Minister, a binational meeting should be held in the coming days to discuss the events.
