Haiti - Elections : The Minustah expresses its deep concern...

While the electoral campaign is in full swing, the Minustah expresses its deep concern following the acts of violence, sometimes fatal, which punctuate the course of this campaign. Noting the increased interest of voters to participate in the elections on March 20 the Minustah appeals to candidates - especially to the presidential - to ensure that the electoral campaign continues in the calm, dignity and mutual respect, free from any threat or act of violence, intimidation or harassment.

Recalling that the Electoral Law provides mechanisms allowing to each candidate to monitor the proper conduct of the electoral process, until the announcement of the final results, the Minustah underlines that the consolidation of the democracy in Haiti depends largely on the willingness of the political men and women of this country to adopt the principles of a peaceful transfer of power and accept the election results through the mechanisms provided by the Electoral Law.

The Minustah finally urges all candidates and their supporters to preserve the integrity of the democratic process and to scrupulously respect the rule of law. Any speech calling to the streets before the publication of the election results by the CEP violates the Electoral Law, undermines the electoral process and ignores the sovereign will of the people, as expressed in the ballot box, it concludes.
