Haiti - Taiwan : Last step for the construction of a electricity grid to PAP

The construction of an electricity grid in Haiti (in Port-au-Prince https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-25139-haiti-flash-taiwan-will-build-an-electricity-grid-for-port-au-prince.html ) by Taiwan (Republic of China (Taiwan)) should begin before the end of the year, confirmed Yui Tah-ray, Director General of the Department of Latin American and Caribbean Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at a press conference on September 13 in Taipei, claiming "The deal is now in the final stage as an on-site investigative team from Taiwan is making final checks in Haiti."

Once the agreement is signed, the project will officially start, said Yui, noting that this agreement will become the first project launched with an ally in the framework of the Official Development Assistance (APD) of Taiwan.

The project which will cost about $ 147 million, financed by a Taiwanese bank in the form of a commercial loan to the Haitian government [the first official ADP loan from Taiwan to a diplomatic ally] and the project will be entrusted to a Taiwanese construction company will include the construction and renovation of substations and transmission towers including training in local maintenance. The project will be under the responsibility of Taiwan's Overseas Engineering and Construction Co. and could take about two years to complete.

Commenting on Taiwan's ODA program, Foreign Minister Joseph Wu said strategic lending to Taiwan's diplomatic allies is designed to create "win-win situations" and does not represent a return to return to checkbook diplomacy to compete with China for those allies' allegiance," he declared.
