Haiti - Tourism : Towards cooperation with DR to promote multi-destination tourism

On Tuesday at Haiti's stand at the IFTM Top Resa 2018, in Paris, Marie-Christine Stephenson, the new Minister of Tourism received the visit of her Dominican counterpart Francisco Javier García Fernández.

The two ministers spoke of promoting and reviving the multi-destination tourism initiated in 2012 by the Minister Stephanie Balmir Villedrouin https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-6030-haiti-tourism-agreements-of-multidestination-tourism.html and have committed to developing joint actions to promote the global tourism of the island. Minister Stephenson wanted tourists visiting Haiti and the Dominican Republic to travel between destinations in both countries without having to pay to cross the border.

García Fernández added that "the goal is for tourists who visit the Dominican Republic, if they have to make a day trip to Haiti, can enjoy an excursion in a complementary offer, without having to pay any fees to the border."

Following their meeting, Minister Stephenson declared "We want to work together. The first thing to do is to advertise the two countries [...] we must work on the image of security, we have a tourist police (PoliTour) and we are working on the regionalization of tourism, north and south, even if we also want to sell the capital as a tourist attraction" believing that both countries could work together to promote the image of an attractive island for tourists.

García Fernández announced that in November he would receive his Haitian counterpart, to continue the cooperation talks and that he will then go to Haiti for a visit of the sites accompanied by of entrepreneurs of the tourism sector. He reiterated the desire of the Dominican Republic to provide advice and support so that Haiti can create a tourist promotion office in the Dominican Republic so that "Dominicans and tourists can know the tourist attractions of Haiti" saying "between Caribbean countries, there should be no competition." https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-6962-haiti-tourism-the-dominican-republic-makes-the-promotion-of-tourism-in-haiti.html but that together we should try to attract visitors to the area to strengthen the entire destination, saying, "As we strengthen the regional destination, each country will increase the arrival of its tourists."
