Haiti - Economy : Week of the Audit, corruption and good governance

This week is taking place the 7th edition of the week of the audit around the theme : "Corruption, money laundering and the financing of terrorism : in wwhat the auditors and internal auditors concerned ?". The opportunity for local and international stakeholders to reflect on the contribution of the internal audit function in the fight against corruption, to participate in the establishment of good governance practices and accountability

As a prelude to this week of the audit, a coaching session was held from November 9th to November 11th for Haitian professionals wishing to prepare the first exam leading to the "Certified Internal Auditor" (CIA) which is the only designation recognized worldwide for internal auditors.

Two seminars were planned this week

The first took place on Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 November on the theme "How to produce value-added audit reports: the art of turning recommendations into action" was led by Belgian expert Tommaso Capurso, Ex-President of the Francophone Union of Internal Audit (UFAI)

During the second seminar, which ends this Friday (November 15-16), the Canadian expert Olivier Beauregard, also president of IIA Montréal, presents the tools used by the internal audit to support modern governance and fight against corruption.

In his opening speech Romuald Jean-Baptiste, the Chairman of IIA-Haiti's Board declared "Corruption, money laundering, terrorist financing are global scourges that no country on the world planet does not escape its devastating effects. You will agree with me in a country like ours where the resources are very limited, the supreme institutions of control are very weak and impunity reigns, it is more than obvious that the tendency to corruption is high.

[...] Corruption is a major problem in Haiti [...] Since the 1990s it seems to have grown [...] These impressions are reflected when analyzing the perception index of the Corruption from 2002 to the present day, Haiti has moved from 89th to 157th in the world for corruption and is among the 10 most corrupt countries in the world.

[...] Auditors and controllers are true watchdogs for good management practices, accountability and good governance, and have a fundamental role to play in detecting errors, preventing fraud and corruption [...] The endowment of the country of a law requiring strong internal audit departments and operating according to the standards of IIA are among others the measures that the whole society must encourage if we want to stop this scourge."
