The Dominican Republic became Tuesday afternoon, the 14th country in the world and the first in Latin America, to oppose the signing of the United Nations Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, announced Flavio Darío Espinal, the Legal Adviser to the Executive, who said that although the covenant has laudable intentions, it could also have harmful consequences for the national territory, if the Dominican Republic signed it on 10 and 11 December in Morocco .

Flavio Darío Espinal explained "Although the proposed pact contains several provisions that are well regarded by the Dominican government, as well as by the vast majority of governments around the world, it also contains provisions contrary to the national interest.

Although this pact is not binding because it is not an international treaty proper, its adoption would engender commitments vis-à-vis the Dominican State likely to compromise its ability to apply its rules in matters of migration and to effectively implement its migration policies. Likewise, this would impose burdens on the Dominican State, which, given the particular context of our island, could be beyond its capacity. Likewise, this pact would create international commitments that would prevent, or severely limit, the Dominican State from dealing with situations that may occur at our land border due to structural conditions and processes."

The other countries that have so far decided not to sign this pact are the United States, Hungary, Austria, Australia, Bulgaria, Israel, Poland, the Czech Republic and Italy. The latter preferred to send the decision to Parliament before making an official decision.

The Dominican Republic now joins the United States, Hungary, Australia, Austria, Poland, Czech Republic, Israel, Switzerland, Slovenia, Denmark, Slovakia, Estonia and Bulgaria who decided not to sign this text. Other countries could join this group like Japan or China among other...

Also, in recent days, a large number of soldiers from the Dominican army, the army, the air, the body specialized in border security (CESFRONT) and other security agencies, accompanied by vehicles and drones surveillance and other military equipment were deployed as reinforcements throughout the border area. The objective of these forces according to the Dominican Ministry of Defense is to prevent the illegal entry of Haitians into Dominican territory.
