Haiti - Economy : The DGI urges citizens to file their tax return

Monday at a press conference, Miradin Morlan, the Director General of the Directorate General of Taxes (DGI), recalled "The deadline for filing its final tax declaration according to the law is 31 January. It is a duty for every citizen who has reached the age of 18 [...] all income generated during the 2017-2018 fiscal year must be declared according to the tax laws in force. The system is declarative subject to verification by the DGI [...]" He asked taxpayers including foreigners to file their income tax returns, especially for the last 5 years before the deadline in order to avoid penalties of 3% per month or fraction of a month without any limit. Affirming that there will be no extension period this year

He advised to declare with frankness and sincerity, whatever the field of activity, all revenues received. Regretting that "too many people with the ability to pay their taxes refuse to do so" he argued for a tax law criminalizing fraud and tax evasion to compel violators to pay their taxes.

While celebrating the performance of the DGI, which raised 39.8 billion Gourdes for the fiscal year 2017-2018 on a forecast of 41 billion, Miradin Morlan called on all taxpayers aged 18 and over to fulfill their duty to citizen by regularly honoring their tax, which will allow the government to materialize projects in favor of the population "All those who pay their taxes allow the country to move on the path of change and progress."

Note that the DGI for the fiscal year 2018-2019, provides tax revenues of about 56 billion Gourdes.
