Haiti - Health : Haiti and DR seek to reduce the number of newborn deaths at the border

At a meeting held at the Provincial Health Directorate of Dajabón, co-chaired by Domingo Colón, Regional Director of North West Health and Chení Benig Pierre, his counterpart in North-East Haiti, the Haitians and Dominican health authorities have agreed on a plan to reduce the number of neonatal deaths in hospitals on both sides of the border.

Joint activities will begin with the support of the Pan American Office and the World Health Organization, led by Dr. Alma Morales and the National Office of Health in DR.

As a follow-up to this activity, the current authorities announced that in the first months of 2019 they would meet again to evaluate the process that would be applied.

Recall that in May 2018 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-24342-haiti-health-increase-in-neonatal-deaths-among-haitian-parturients-in-dr.html Dr. Altagracia Guzmán , the Dominican Minister of Health had blamed the number of newborn deaths at the border among Haitian women for lack of prenatal control, malnutrition, anemia and genetic factors or diseases as the main causes of these deaths highlighting "Most Dominican women have follow-up checks on their pregnancies, unlike Haitian women who arrive in Dominican hospitals without prenatal care and this becomes a risk factor."
