Jobert C. Angrand, the Minister of Agriculture went to Parliament at the invitation of the Senate Finance Committee, to defend front the senators the budget allocated to his ministry for the year 2018-2019.

In the draft finance law 2018-2019, the budget envelope of the Ministry of Agriculture increased by 35% over the previous year to 11,7 billion gourdes, including 1.6 billion for its operation and 10.1 billion investments (pages 78 to 80 of the 2018-2019 Budget Bill)

According to the Minister, in this fiscal year, the Ministry's interventions will touch on seven major strategic axes :

1 - Restructuring and institutional strengthening of the Ministry of Agriculture and sectoral governance;

2 - Flood control, recovery of surface water and improvement of vegetation cover;

3 - Construction, rehabilitation, maintenance and development of hydro-agricultural infrastructure;

4 - Innovation of the sector by integrating knowledge and practices of agricultural biotechnologies;

5 - Dynamisation and development of strategic sectors for food security and export;

6 - Access of agricultural products to markets and marketing;

7 - Financing: credit and agricultural insurance.

Minister Angrand gave a brief report on the Ministry's achievements during the past fiscal year. He pointed out that the budget allocated to the operation was spent at 96%. In addition, he said that the financing of the Public Investment Program (PIP) was carried out only by the Treasury and amounted to 837 million Gourdes.
