Haiti - Cuba : Beginning of negotiations on migration between the two Nations

Thursday, in Port-au-Prince, held the first round of negotiations on migration between Haiti and Cuba with the aim of establishing a memorandum of understanding to ensure the regular movement of people between the two countries.

On the Haitian side, the delegation was headed by Jude Piquant, Cabinet Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs accompanied by Joseph Cianciulli, Director of Immigration and Emigration. and several representatives of various ministries involved.

The Cuban delegation was headed by Laura Pujol Torres, Deputy Director General of Consular Affairs and Cuban Residents at the Chancellery, including Deputy Director Zulan Popa, of Felix Echevarría, Head of Immigration and Emigration, and Cuban Ambassador Luis Castillo

Jude Piquant, assured that the growing displacement of the population should be done legally and emphasized that this meeting will improve the conditions of migration between the two countries.

For his part, Cuban Ambassador Luis Castillo pointed out that at present more and more citizens are moving and settling in other countries, assimilating the cultures of host countries and reiterating the importance of this process. migration is conducted safely.

Establishing a memorandum of understanding and maintaining a direct relationship between the two governments, to avoid future problems in the area of ​​migration, are key issues, said Laura Pujol Torres. In addition to regulating the safe and orderly flow of migrants, this document will also establish a legal framework to combat human trafficking and smuggling.

Recall that the bilateral relations between Cuba and Haiti began in 1904 and have been strengthened over the last 20 years, with the presence of thousands of health specialists, as well as education, agriculture, fisheries and construction, among others.
