Haiti - Environment : A $33.5M project blocked by a land conflict...

The project of construction of a waste dump site in the district of Cap-Haïtien, provoked a lively controversy between the town halls of Limonade, Cap-Haitien and Quartier Morin, (the three municipalities concerned by this project) and the businessman, Lesly Nazon claiming rights on the land located in Mouchinette, in the commune of Limonade, where this landfill must be built.

The World Bank, the French Development Agency and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) are the main financial partners for this US $ 33.5 million project, which covers 19 hectares of land.

"This litigation only adds to the problems of the inhabitants of the municipalities concerned, which until now have barely managed to manage even domestic waste. In Cap-Haïtien, despite the protests of residents in the communal section of Petite-Anse, the mangrove is transformed wild dump, which not only threatens the health of the population, but also weakens the area in the rainy season," says Esaïe Lefranc .

Several concordant information, unconfirmed by the mayor and the authorities concerned, suggest that Lesly Nazon "would have left the country" because of threats and the turn that would take this case. Information to be taken with caution as it should be...
