Haiti - Environment : Call for the protection of bottlenose dolphins near the Haitian coast

Following the social media broadcast of images of dolphins near Haitian beaches, Joseph Jouthe, the Minister of the Environment took the opportunity to invite the general population and coastal communities in particular to protect this marine species which does not represent any danger for the man.

Minister Jouthe, accompanied by a technical team from his Ministry, visited the site to verify the information and to identify more precisely which species of dolphin it was.

According to the Technicians, the species cetaceans observed especially around the beaches of the Côte des Arcadins, is called "Bottlenose dolphin" Tursiops truncatus. Its fusiform body of 2 to 4 meters adopts gray shades more or less clear or dark on the dorsal part, and white on the belly. The dorsal fin is triangular and curved and measures approximately 23 cm. The bottlenose dolphin, which can live up to 40 years, is a social cetacean weighing between 150 and 400 kg (for males), which lives in small groups of two to fifteen individuals. The Ministry's technicians explain that dolphins play a major role in maintaining the balance of the food chains and that their good health reflects that of the sea.

The bottlenose dolphin has a predilection for warm waters whose depth does not exceed 30 meters and its populations are migratory, unlike the dolphins of the open sea who are sedentary.

Faced with the pleasant presence of these cetaceans, Minister Jouthe said that awareness and information campaigns targeting mainly coastal communities will be set in motion, in order to prevent these dolphins from being disturbed or even killed by fishermen, referring to unfortunate cases perpetrated in the past in the North of the country by ignorance...
