Haiti - FLASH : Storm Dorian should border northern Haiti, but vigilance remains

On Wednesday, heads of agencies and partners of the National Risk Management System (SNGRD) received explanations on the evolution of tropical storm DORIAN and its estimated trajectory. The preferred scenario, suggests a passage of the storm center to the North in the immediate vicinity of Haiti, which means that the national territory would be (if nothing changes) on the edge of the trajectory, but still in the zone of influence.

According to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) trajectory forecast, Haiti should not be "directly affected" by Tropical Storm Dorian. However, some thunderstorm cells falling off the spiral bands of the system, may cause intense rainfall and localized thunderstorms accompanied by spontaneous gusts of wind, especially in the northern and central regions.

Vigilance remains in effect from Thursday and all sectors are mobilized if the activation of the National Emergency Operation Center is necessary. The Support Group of the International Community (IGACI) is also mobilized with the Directorate of Civil Protection (DPC) pending the passage of Dorian.

According to Tuesday night's report from the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) Dorian is currently sailing in the Caribbean Sea following a west north-west course heading south from Puerto Rico to then graze the western tip of the Dominican Republic before going up to the North of the island of Hispaniola during the next 36 to 48 hours.

Last night, the center of tropical storm Dorian was about 15.5 km north latitude and 62.6 km west longitude, about 700 km southeast of Saona Island and was moving to the speed of 20 km / h with maximum sustained winds of 85 km./h with an expected intensity increase in the next 48 hours, due to the fact that Dorian will cross the waters of the Caribbean Sea.
