Haiti - Culture : First participation of Haiti in the Venice Biennale

The Ministry of Culture and Communication of the Republic of Haiti is pleased to announce that this year, for the first time, the Venice Biennale [June 4 to November 27, 2011], will see the participation national of Haiti.

The pavilion of Haiti during this Biennial will present two art events in parallel: "Haiti Kingdom of This World" until July 31st, an itinerant exhibition of the Haitian Giscard Bouchotte, who will present the works of 15 artists (Sergine André, Élodie Barthelemy, Mario Benjamin, Maxence Denis, Edouard Duval-Carrié, Frankétienne, Guyodo, Sébastien Jean, Killy, Tessa Mars, Pascale Monnin, Paskö, Barbara Prézeau Roberto Stephenson, Hervé Télémaque, Patrick Vilaire) living in Haiti and the Diaspora, and an outdoor exhibit entitled "Death and Fertility" conceived by Italian artist Daniele Geminiani with the support of the photographer and English publisher Gordon Leah. The pavilion of the Republic of Haiti will pay tribute to Edouard Glissant, Caribbean writer and philosopher who died recently.

The exhibition "Death and Fertility" will exhibit until July 28, 2011, the works of three artists of Port-au-Prince, Jean Hérard Celeur, André Eugène and Claude Saintilus, that are part of group Atis Rezistans, a group of sculptors of the Grande Rue. The exhibition, Death and Fertility will take place within two 40-foot shipping containers, arranged to form a cross "T". The containers red and blue refer to the colors of the flag of Haiti. Realizing the outdoor pavilion, in a temporary structure such as shipping containers, refers to the social, national, cultural and economic reality of Haiti, whose history has been marked by international trade and exploitation. At the same time, this refers to the fact that the artists in this exhibition come from a very poor neighborhood of Port-au-Prince, which is near the sea and port.

This artistic presence in the Venice Biennale, will allow the Haitian creators to present to the world, the Haitian art at its best and integrate the major art exhibitions and international biennials.
