Haiti - Environment : IDB $1 million for recycling plastics
The innovation laboratory of the Inter-American Development Bank Group (IDB Lab), will financially support the plastic recycling capacity of the Environmental Cleaning Solutions SA (ECSSA) in Haiti, considered as one of the countries presenting the most great risk of plastic penetration into the ocean. The country generates a large volume of plastic waste in urban areas because of the high consumption of treated water, non-alcoholic beverages and takeaways sold in plastic containers.
Recall that ECSSA, a Haitian recycling company, collects post-consumer plastic materials to turn them into high-quality plastic flakes for export, applies a social enterprise model that facilitates the collection, processing and sustainable export of recyclable plastics.
$1 million (BID Lab) funding will support expansion of ECSSA's capacity to recycle plastics and produce a wider variety of finished products, including synthetic wood, for sale in markets national and international
The expansion of ECSSA's activities and product lines will result in an increase in the number of jobs for plastic collectors and the prices they collect for collection. Haitians living on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea will benefit from the sustainable preservation of the marine environment on which livelihoods depend.
The $400,000 (BID Lab) technical cooperation will be used to establish Haiti's first commercial offshore plastics supply chain and create economic plans for coastal communities participating in this new supply chain.
