Haiti - Politic : President Moïse launches a campaign against gender violence

On Monday, as part of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, President Jovenel Moïse, in the presence of Me René Sylvestre, President of the Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSPJ) and Helen Lime, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, launched a 16-day campaign of activism against violence against women.

The Head of State denounced, all the forms of violence of inequalities and discriminations against women in Haiti emphasizing that these practices constitute a major obstacle to the economic growth and a brake to the blossoming of the youth, in particular the girls and women inclusively.

Moïse reaffirmed that Haiti, like other Nations of the earth, "says no to violence against women" and promised to do everything possible to drastically reduce these acts that undermine the international conventions signed by Haiti.

"The political turmoil should not be used as a pretext to give the free space to criminals who use rape of women, as a means of political pressure and reprisals", insisted the Head of State who pleaded for a strengthening of all the criminal courts so that the aggressors pay for their crimes.

It strongly condemned the rapes perpetrated in recent weeks against women, including those incarcerated in the civil prison of Gonaïves https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-29349-haiti-flash-all-details-on-the-mutiny-and-rapes-at-the-gonaives-prison.html , the President of the Republic highlighted the importance of the work of actors working in the sector, especially in the prevention of these acts and in the accompaniment of the victims and invited all the victims to lodge a complaint so that the authors and co-perpetrators of these abuses are judged and punished.

Finally, the Head of State called on all the forces of the Nation to join forces to strengthen the fight against this scourge that affects the human race and women in particular. An important step in the fight for equality between women and men in Haiti.
