Haiti - 217th of the death of Toussaint Louverture : Message by Lesly Condé

This Tuesday, April 7, 2020 reminds us of the 217th anniversary of the death of Toussaint Louverture hero of independence who was deported to France in June 1802, incarcerated at the Fort de Joux https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-12415-haiti-politic-moving-tribute-of-president-martelly-to-toussaint-louverture.html , where sick he died in his cell on April 7, 1803.

On this day of remembrance, as every year, Lesly Condé, Ex-Consul General of Haiti in Chicago (August 26, 2004 - May 25, 2018) does not fail to share with all Haitians his reflections :

Message from Lesly Condé :

"Dear compatriots,

I make it my duty to remind you that Tuesday April 7, 2020 brings back the 217th anniversary of the death of Toussaint Louverture.

It is time to reflect together on the importance of the life of this great man for the history of humanity, and more particularly that of our Nation. At a time when the dehumanization of an entire race served the interests of the slave system, this man stood out for his bravery, integrity, sagacity and unwavering devotion to the cause of human dignity.

For having established the solid foundations of the valiant fight against this sordid exploitation of the human by the human, for having fiercely defended the ideals of justice and freedom in defiance of his own privileges, Toussaint Louverture deserves to be known as the one of the most legitimate heroes the human race has ever produced.

Toussaint Louverture therefore dedicated his whole life to the struggle for universal justice and freedom. Even if his heritage belongs to the whole world, it is first of all ours. We Haitians are the deep and many roots to which he alluded at the dark moment of his abduction.

If nothing can prevent us from being proud of Toussaint and our unique identity which it is at the origin, we must also honor his precious memory by practicing, like him, self-esteem, solidarity and an unconditional attachment to our common dignity.

At a time when our country is facing the challenges of the twenty-first century, we must, like Toussaint Louverture, let ourselves be guided by wisdom, patience and determination.

Patriotically

Lesly Condé. "
