Haiti - FLASH : The hurricane season 2020 more active than normal

The 2020 hurricane season which begins on June 1st over the North Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Basin and which ends on November 30, is expected to be more active than normal in the Atlantic basin, according to forecasts by Colorado State University (CSU) Tropical Weather Project team.

3We anticipate that the 2020 Atlantic Basin hurricane season will have above-normal activity,," said Dr. Phil Klotzbach, whose group he leads plans for the 2020 season : 16 named storms (gusts over 100 km/h or more), 8 hurricanes and 4 major hurricanes (category 3 or higher with winds of more than 180 km/h on the hurricane Saffir-Simpson wind scale).

Stressing "This is above the 30-year average of 12 named storms, 6 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes."

Remember that although the official Atlantic hurricane season extends from June 1 to November 30, storms can sometimes develop outside this period as was the case in the three previous seasons with the subtropical storm Andrea (May 2019), Tropical Storm Alberto (May 2018) and Tropical Storm Arlene (April 2017).

The CSU outlook is based on more than 30 years (1981 to 2010) of statistical factors combined with season data showing similar characteristics of sea level pressure and sea surface temperatures in the oceans Atlantic and eastern Pacific.

Recall that the CSU had predicted for the 2019 season an activity slightly below the average of (1981-2010), a forecast which proved to be correct.

List of names of named storms and hurricanes for the 2020 season :

Bertha, Christobal, Dolly, Edouard, Fay, Gonzalo, Hanna, Isaias, Josephine, Kyle, Laura, Marco, Nana, Omar, Paulette, René, Sally, Teddy, Vicky and Wilfred
