Haiti - Climate : Showers and thunderstorms, the South will not be spared

A broad area of low pressure located nearly stationary over the Caribbean Sea to the south of Jamaica, continues to generate showers and thunderstorms on Haiti today and the next few days. The southern peninsula of Haiti should receive the largest amounts of precipitation as the center of the system is approaching more and more of the southern coasts of the country. The most significant showers will affect especially the Nippes, the Grand Anse, South, Southeast, Artibonite, West and the North-west and progressively the rest of the country.

Since the soil is already saturated in many parts of the country, the Permanent Secretariat for Risk Management and Disaster (SPGRD) maintains this Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 9am the phase of alert to the level of orange vigilance (ie impact risk of moderate to severe) to heavy rains in the National Emergency Plan face to the threats of heavy rain with risk of river flood, rockfalls, landslide, collapse and flooding on our departments including the Nippes, Grande-anse, South, Southeast, Artibonite, Northwest and West.

The National Centre of Meteorology (CNM) together with the Maritime and Navigation Service of Haiti (SEMANAH), the National Civil Aviation Office (OFNAC) and the National Airport Authority (AAN) maintain the ban until further order of the cabotage operations particularly on the coast south of the country as well as flights at the arrival and to the departure of Jérémie, les Cayes and Jacmel.
