Haiti - Reconstruction : Sherbrooke will send specialists in Geomatics

As part of a joint initiative of the Union of Municipalities of Quebec and of the Quebec Federation of Municipalities, the city of Sherbrooke will send geomatics specialists in Haiti to help with reconstruction.

"The City of Sherbrooke is well placed to help, " has informed Bernard Sévigny, Mayor of Sherbrooke "The City of Sherbrooke is the best developed in terms of geomatics. So we have experts in Sherbrooke and we were asked if we could train Haitians at the level of issues of geomatics in this project."

"The requests that we received, is to provide technical assistance for training in Haiti, make an inventory of facilities that were destroyed and evaluate the priorities of reconstruction at the level of infrastructure like sewers and electricity networks which were severely damaged" explained Michael Howard, the head of the Division of geomatics.

The city of Sherbrooke will pay the salaries of four specialists, within the framework of five missions of two weeks each. The bill is estimated to 22,000 dollars, funded in part by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). The first group will leave for Haiti next July.
