Haiti - Cholera : The MSPP is not saying the whole truth to the people...

The Director General of the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP), declares that the cholera cases are decreasing in the metropolitan area thanks to the measures taken by the Ministry...

For his part Roland Van Hauwermeiren, Country Director for Oxfam in Haiti had indicated that "The balance of the cholera epidemic in Carrefour is much worse than that recorded in November 2010. At that time, there was a maximum of 900 reported cases of cholera by week. Now, health care organizations report more than 300 new cases every day..."

Mr. Thimothée indicated that the number of CTC available to the ministry is more than enough, and that the fact to open more CTC could sow fear in the population...

For his part Roland Van Hauwermeiren of Oxfam Haiti, which provides assistance in Carrefour to more than 140,000 people, declared "This area is very sensitive to cholera, because there are not even the most basic sanitary facilities and there are very little access to drinking water [...] However, the number of deaths is much lower than in November 2010, people are able to get faster help and are now aware of how they can get cholera and what to do when symptoms of cholera occur [...] Yet even if people are aware of this, it is very difficult for them to follow these recommendations without the services of basic sanitation ... The arrival of heavy rains last week also contributed to the spread of the bacteria in local water sources."

This is unfortunately not he first time that the MSPP disseminates information that does not correspond to the reality or manipulates the figures of its assessments, HaitiLibre has denounced many times this deplorable practice since the beginning of the epidemic. The public has the right to know the truth and we can only hope that under the new administration Martelly these practices will change and that our countrymen will know the true extent of the epidemic that affects them in order to cope responsibly
