It is with great sadness that Eddy Jackson Alexis, the Secretary of State for Communication learned of the death of Me Gérard Gourgue which occurred on Friday, December 4, 2020, at the Canapé-Vert hospital at the age of 95 years.

"Me Gérard Gourgue, great defender of human rights, professor emeritus at the University, great lawyer; he has always known how to make his remarkable contribution to the reputation of the profession.

Thanks to his rigor, integrity and dedication in all areas of his professional and personal life. Ardent defender of human rights, Me Gourgue was also Minister, Ambassador, candidate in the presidential election of Haiti which he could have won.

When Jean Claude Duvalier fell, on February 7, 1986, Me Gérard Gourgue joined Henri Namphy's National Council of Government (CNG).

With his insightful and inspired reflections, he has inspired several generations of lawyers and ardent defenders of democracy and respect for fundamental freedoms.

The fame of Me Gérard Gourgue has crossed borders thanks to his career but also and above all thanks to the remarkable and jovial man he has always been.

The Secretary of State for Communication bows before this emblematic figure who will have marked the history of Haiti and directs his thoughts to his family and loved ones."
