Haiti - COVID : First injections of vaccines

Friday July 16, at the University Hospital of Peace in the capital, under the supervision of the Ministry of Health, 38 people, health workers and the elderly, became the first people vaccinated against Covid-19 in Haiti in as part of a test, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) said.

Recall that on Wednesday July 14, Haiti received 500,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccine from the MODERNA Laboratory, a vaccine called "Spikevax" (since June 21, 2021), a donation from the United States as part of the COVAX mechanism https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34237-haiti-covid-500-000-vaccines-in-haiti-75-of-haitians-do-not-want-to-be-vaccinated.html

The vaccinations will continue during the weekend https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34245-haiti-vaccination-more-than-900-solar-refrigerators-to-keep-vaccines-cold.html said OPS.

Note that Haiti has reported nearly 20,000 cases and nearly 500 deaths https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34248-haiti-diaspora-covid-19-daily-bulletin-483.html since the start of the pandemic. Experts believe these figures are vastly underestimated because there are few tests in Haiti.

Vaccinations began nearly two months after the Government announced a health emergency and imposed a curfew as the country entered a 3rd wave on early May 10, 2021 which has already claimed 6,122 confirmed cases and 220 deaths.

While masks are mandatory to enter some businesses, few Haitians follow the measures in public transport and crowded markets and in public places.
