Haiti - FLASH : The first 54 km of the Dominican border fence will be completed in 7 months (Video)

Launched a week ago now, the first Phase (54km) of construction of the border fence comprising 19 watchtowers, 10 access gates and 54 patrol paths should be completed within 7 to 9 months. The cost of civil works is approximately $30 million excluding all technological devices.

The physical fence of 160 km in total will consist of a reinforced concrete wall and a metal structure with a height of 3.90 meters which will be crowned by an accordion of metal barbed wire with blades. It will have 170 surveillance towers and checkpoints, in addition to some 71 controlled access gates. The fence will be double in the most critical areas

It should be added that this fence will have, in addition to the presence of the military, a state-of-the-art surveillance system, among other devices: radar, motion detectors, high-definition cameras with night vision and infra-red in addition to a squadron of surveillance drones.

All information will be transmitted in real time to central control posts.

3It is a fence that will benefit both countries because it will control bilateral trade, regulate migration flows to fight mafias that traffic in human beings, tackle drug trafficking and the illegal sale of weapons [...]" declared President Abinader during the launch of the works.

A second Phase will be awarded in the second half of 2022

A second stage will be awarded during the second half of this year.

The new fence is one more step in the policy of tougher migration measures that the Dominican Republic has adopted towards Haiti in recent months, measures that the authorities justify due to the worsening crisis in Haiti.

Abinader announced that from February 21, biometric data will begin to be taken from people crossing the border, in order to facilitate their identification.

For Pelegrín Castillo, Vice-President of the radical opposition "National Progressive Force" (FNP) "The wall is a sign that there is no Dominican solution to the crisis in Haiti" adding that this wall "[...] has extraordinary value as a message to the international community, which wants the Dominican Republic to take charge of the problems of Haiti."

The only voice of empathy towards the situation of Haitian immigrants was expressed by the Bishop of Mao-Montecristi, Diómedes Espinal, who is however favorable to the construction of the fence while emphasizing "Let's not build walls to prevent solidarity , commercial relations, fraternity and the good that we can do for other brothers who are poorer and more needy."
