Haiti - Justice : Haiti wishes to provide legal assistance to Haitian detainees in the DR

The Attorney General Me Miriam Germán Brito in the company of Roberto Hernández Basilio, Director of Penitentiary and Correctional Services and Hilda Patricia Lagombra Polanco, Director of Correction and Rehabilitation Centers received a Haitian delegation led by Judith Nazareth Auguste, the Minister of Haitians Living Abroad (MHAVE) composed of the former Ambassador of Haiti to the Dominican Republic, former Minister of MHAVE and President of the Zile Foundation, Edwin Paraison, the Ambassador of Haiti to Santo Domingo, Smith Auguste and by Israel Jacky Cantave, Chief of Staff of MHAVE.

Minister Auguste expressed the interest of the Government of Haiti in setting up cooperation mechanisms allowing Haiti to provide greater support to its compatriots detained in detention centers in the Dominican Republic.

Let's recall that in Dominican prisons 1,464 Haitians are currently behind bars, mainly in the prison of La Victoria (363 inmates), El Seibo (110), Anamuya de Higuëy (101) and La Vega (100). Haitians represent 80.08% of the 1,828 foreign prisoners in 2022. murderers.html

Me German Brito welcomed the interest of the Government of Haiti, stressing that it was very important for the respect of human rights, that Haiti is able to provide legal support to its citizens in conflict with the criminal law of the Dominican Republic, through the MHAVE and the Embassy of Haiti in Santo Domingo as well as the Zile Foundation to keep the lines of communication and cooperation open to deal with issues related to detainees of Haitian nationality.
