Haiti - Kenscoff : Launch of the AQUHAÏTI project

The implementation of practical and innovative solutions is one of the ways with the most potential to provide answers to development problems. It is within this framework that the AQUHAÏTI project falls, an initiative set up with the financial support of the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development (AECID), carried out in Haiti by the Tecnova Technological Center, the CIDEAL Foundation and the association "Haitian Solidarity for the Development of Kenscoff" (Solidarité Haïtienne pour le Développement de Kenscoff - SOHADERK).

The objective of this project is to contribute to the development of the rural community of Kenscoff, with the establishment of new agricultural practices that are more sustainable with natural resources, which at the same time make it possible to increase productivity, to address the issue of malnutrition through self-consumption and reducing dependence on imports.

To this end, it is proposed to implement the technique of aquaponics, which combines hydroponics and aquaculture. Aquaponics consists of the cultivation of plants in symbiosis with the breeding of fish. It is an ecosystem in which three types of organisms are involved: Fish, whose droppings are the source of nutrients for plants, in the form of fertilizer. Aerobic bacteria that transform manure into nitrates that can be assimilated by plants in mineral form and cultivated plants that purify water.

This project was launched at the end of May 2022 in the presence of the Ambassador of Spain in Haiti, Sergio Cuesta, of the Program Manager at the Technical Office of Spanish Cooperation in Haiti, José Luis Rojo, of the Vice-President of the Technological Center Tecnova, Ms. Carmen Roman with also the participation of representatives of international organizations, the public and private sector and Civil Society.
