Haiti - Reconstruction : Inauguration of the new Court of Peace of Acul-du-Nord

Last Thursday, local authorities and representatives of the UN Mission for Stabilization in Haiti (Minustah) have inaugurated the new Court of Peace of the town of Acul-du-Nord, about 20 km from Cap-Haitien.

Patrice Gespalien Julien, the mayor of the town welcomed the new premises "Finally, the town of Acul-du-Nord has a new premise for the Court of Peace. This demonstrates the commitment of the Minustah to continue to support the Haitian authorities in strengthening the rule of law."

This new building, costing a total of $USD46,029 as been funded by the Minustah within the framework of ts Quick Impact Projects (QIP). It has two offices for the judges, an office for the clerks, a secretariat, a room for archives, a custody room, a jury room, a room for the objects seized, a large room of about 100 places for hearings and a toilet block.

The old ruined building, which housed the hearings, is a distant memory for the Mayor indicating that the justice will regain "a new breath because now, our judges will be able exercise their duties under better conditions".

A statement, shared by Josias Talabert, the judge of the town, who sees in this new construction "...a new beginning for the strengthening of justice in this town [...] We will do everything to make justice accessible to all citizens of the town, and the new Court of Peace is an important means."

For his part, Jobes Jolicoeur Michel, the Deputy of Acul-du-Nord,welcomed the good cooperation between the Minustah and local authorities and qualified the construction of the court of "excellent initiative"
