Haiti - Education : Towards a return to school, but when ?

This week has intensified the mobilization for the return to school. At least three times a week, for more than two months, Nesmy Manigat the Minister of Education and Meniol Jeune his Director General have organized yet another working meeting this week with the Departmental Directors of Education (DDE), the Technical Directors of Teaching and the pole coordinators.

It was particularly a question of ensuring the follow-up of the working meetings of the 10 DDEs with their respective educational communities as part of the administrative and pedagogical start of the school year. A framework document, drawn up for this purpose, serves as a reference for the Departmental Directorates for the mobilization of the educational community, local authorities and partners around the school.

However, despite the various calls for the return to class, since October 3, the Ministry can only note this gradual and difficult return to school, in a context marked by violence and fear.

Going back to school seems to have become a crime, an offense penalizing more than 4 million children.

According to the Ministry, a glimmer of hope appears on the horizon, attempts to resume classes in public and private schools have begun in several departments, according to reports presented by DDE officials. Isolated cases for the moment, but decisive, which announce a change in progress, where the actors are more involved for the benefit of the children, in particular through interventions and public notes.

The safety, availability and accessibility of fuel to facilitate school transport, especially for parents and educational agents, are essential factors for the overall revival of school activities and respect for the right to 'education.

The mobilization of the Ministry will also intensify because the future of the children and the country is at stake. The school must rise above the divisions, it cannot wait for the end of the conflicts to function, because its mission is to train citizens to live together which makes it possible to prevent and resolve conflicts peacefully, affirms the Minister.
