Haiti - FLASH : Annual inflation explodes to 38.7% (Sept. 2022)

A significant increase was observed in September 2022, i.e. a monthly variation of +8.2% (over 2 months) and an increase of 38.7% year-on-year (last 12 months), compared to +3.2% and 30.5% respectively in July 2022 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-37586-haiti-flash-inflation-breaks-records-and-crosses-the-30-mark.html

The monthly increase (compared to August) observed in September 2022 is mainly the result of the behavior of the following consumption indices:

"Food products and non-alcoholic beverages": +8.2% over one month and 44.3% over one year;

"Clothing and footwear": +5.3% over one month and 40.9% over one year;

"Health" +5.1% over one month and 31.2% over one year);

"Restaurant": +5.4% over one month and 30.4% over one year.

Products with higher annual inflation:

Power:

Imported rice (68.7%), decabri meat (47.0%), chicken (64.5%), powdered milk (60.4%), dry peas (43.3%) and cabbage (26.6%);

Clothing and footwear:

Clothing manufacturing (32.6%), dress (53.7%), panties (40.5%), suit, universal jacket (47.3%) and shoes and tennis (50.3%);

Health:

Glasses with corrective lenses (40.0%) and laboratory analysis, radiography (33.6%);

Restaurants:

Meals eaten outside, i.e. outside the home (31.1%).

A higher price increase was observed at the level of imported products, i.e. 52.0% year-on-year and 30.9% year-on-year for local products.

Consumer Price Index for the whole country by consumption function:

General index: 38.7% over one year and +6.5% over the month of August 2022

Food and non-alcoholic beverages: month +8.2%, year 44.3%

Alcoholic beverages and tobacco: month +4.2%, year 25.3%

Clothing and footwear: month +5.3%, year 40.9%

Housing, water, gas, electricity and other fuels: month +4.6%, year 32.3%

Furniture, household items and routine household maintenance: month +5.7%, year 36.6%

Health: month +5.2%, year 31.2%

Transport: month +2.8%, year 39.5%

Communication: month +3.9%, year 14.8%

Leisure: month +4.2%, year 22.1%

Teaching: month +4.2, year 7.1%

Restaurants: month +5.4%, year 31/1%

Miscellaneous goods and services: month +4.9%, year 33.4%

Headline CPI: 2021 September 13.1%; October 19.7%; November 24.6%; December 24.7% 2022 January 24.0%; February 25.2%; March 25.9%; April 26.7%; May 27.7%; June 29.0%; July 30.5%; August 32.0%; September 38.7%

CPI by geographic region:

The most significant variations in September 2022 year-on-year concern the: South (41.1%) and Metropolitan Area (39.5%).

Metropolitan area: year +39.5% (+6.7% over one month)

(Port-au-Prince, Delmas, Pétion-ville, Carrefour and Croix des Bouquet);

Rest West: year +38.3% (+6.5% over one month)

(South-East and West Departments without the metropolitan area);

North: year +37.5% (+6.5% over one month)

(North, North East and North West Department);

South: year +41.1% (+6.7% over one month)

(Department of the South, Grande-Anse and Nippes);

Transversal: year +36.9% (+6.3% over one month)

(Department of Center and Artibonite).
