Haiti - FLASH : 1,448 people killed and 1,005 kidnapped by gangs in 11 months

Friday December 9, 2022, the eve of World Human Rights Day Volker Türk, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, during a press conference organized in Geneva, spoke in particular about the crisis in Haiti, which "cannot be ignored". Especially since it is a country where armed gangs, which would be "supported by the economic and political elites, already control around 60% of the capital" and where some 4.7 million people are facing hunger in the country.

Since the beginning of 2022, 1,448 people have been killed, 1,145 injured and 1,005 kidnapped by gangs. "And don't forget that behind each of these figures are hidden families and entire communities that are torn apart by violence," said Volker Türk.

Gang members also use sexual violence to instill fear and exert control over the population, as highlighted in an October report by the Human Rights Branch of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-37890-haiti-flash-sexual-violence-a-weapon-used-by-gangs-to-instill-fear-report.html "It is inadmissible that people take advantage of this endemic insecurity and the suffering of Haitians," insisted Türk.
