Stephen Harper, the Prime Minister of Canada has announced Tuesday the support of his country to 2 new projects that will help save the lives of mothers, infants and children in Haiti.

These projects are the culmination of a call for maternal, newborn and child development project proposals initiated as part of Canada’s contribution to the 2010 G-8 Muskoka Initaitive. The recipients, which include various Canadian development organizations and agencies, were selected based on the effectiveness and sustainability of their submissions.

Improving Maternal/Child Health in Haiti

This project aims to reduce morbidity and mortality in mothers, newborns and children under the age of five in Haiti’s northern communes of Grande Rivière du Nord and Bahon. Approximately 12,000 families will benefit from nutrition demonstrations and more than 1,600 women will have increased access to prenatal and postnatal visits.

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Health

Through this project, more than 354,000 people, 79 percent women and children, in eight countries (Afghanistan, Cambodia, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Haiti, Laos, Nepal, Zambia) will have access to improved drinking water and adequate sanitation, improved hygiene with increased awareness, and, ultimately, improved maternal and child health.
