Haiti - HUEH : Resident doctors on strike for more than 2 months

The resident doctors of the Hospital of the State University of Haiti (HUEH) have been on strike since December 22, 2022. After more than 2 months, the strike continues faced a Government deaf to their legitimate demands.

The striking resident doctors say that other public hospitals in the country will follow the strike movement, stressing that the operating conditions of the HUEH are not different from those of other public hospitals...

The strikers are demanding the material resources necessary for the proper functioning of the hospital, which for almost a year has received only 4 hours of electricity on average per day. It requires better hygiene and sanitary conditions to prevent patients, especially in the post-operative room, from contracting infections.

On the salary side, resident doctors recall that their salary called "residence costs" amounts to 12,500 Gourdes gross monthly (84 US dollars per month) before deduction of income tax.

Concerning the conditions of stays of resident doctors, they affirm that the situation is deplorable, specifying that 11 residents are housed in a room which has only 3 beds, no access to water in the showers, no running water, no cafeteria, no laundry room...
