Haiti - Social: Sophia Martelly, meets with elders

On the occasion of International Day of Older Persons, which takes place this Saturday 1st October, Ms. Sophia Martelly, the First Lady of the Republic of Haiti has met with forty men and women of the third age, and representatives of organizations and associations of older persons.

This encounter held at the National Palace is an opportunity for the First Lady to sit down, once again with seniors, which, more than any other segment of society, need attention and a breath of joy. Ms. Martelly also took the opportunity to receive their grievances in order to better learn about the current situation of this vulnerable group of the society. She reminded them that, despite the indifference of each other, they still remain the symbol of dynamism and of love that characterized the Haitian society and invites them to regain confidence.

This encounter took place in a festive atmosphere when these seniors sang, danced and even recited poems. In a moment of joy translating the general atmospherea participant of 74 years let his heart speak, admitting that he felt again in adolescence, and that he has only 14 years old today. The First Lady, which invites young people to provide a much more attentive treatment to seniors, offered them gifts, including hygiene kits.

She emphasized on the fact that we can not build the future without a connection cordial, sincere and committed towards those who have been there before us. The encounter was also included in the framework of respect and of the deference to elders. Ms. Martelly committed to accompany and support any movement or initiative whose mission is to help the elderly.

The members of this national delegation are from different municipalities of the country and some of them are victims of the earthquake of January 12, 2010.

The Presidency remains convinced that the elderly deserve a sustained attention from the authorities and and undertakes to take all necessary measures to improve their condition of existence.
