Haiti - Crisis : The Central American Parliament demands a rapid, safe and active intervention in Haiti

Within the framework of the Ordinary Plenary Assembly, the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN), headquartered in Guatemala, approved an initiative that requires a "rapid, safe and active" intervention in Haiti through international organizations such as the Organization of United Nations (UN), the Organization of American States (OAS), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the European Union.

An urgent appeal has been made to IOM to address and resolve the serious socio-economic and migratory situation suffered by the Haitian people.

The member countries of the Central American Parliament (El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and the Dominican Republic, each with 20 deputies in the Parliament) also demand compliance with the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, which has was approved by the member countries of the Central American Integration System (SICA) an agreement signed at the United Nations General Assembly in 2018.

The text of the initiative approved by PARLACEN urges the Heads of State and Government members of SICA ([Belize, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama]) to recommend to the United Nations, the increase of the budget or what is necessary in the planning, the execution of the actions intended to generate a climate of socio-economic development, which contribute drastically to the situation of poverty and extreme poverty, factors that influence the decision of thousands of Haitians to take an obligatory migratory route in search of better living conditions."

Deputy Ramón Emilio Goris of the Dominican Republic recommended that his country, as a member of SICA, always give priority to diplomatic relations in its immigration policy in order to maintain a good climate of coexistence between the two nations that share the Hispaniola Island.

He also called for the urgent intervention of the United States, Canada and the European Union "to provide humanitarian aid, development plans, food security and democracy for the benefit of the Haitian population."
