Haiti - FLASH : Major fire at the Shada market (Pétion-ville)

On the night of May 3 to 4, 2023 around midnight, a fire broke out in the Shada market in Pétion-ville, located between Rigaud and Geffrard streets, not far from the Peace Court and the Saint Jean Bosco Church.

The firefighters intervened to try to control the disaster but encountered fuel problems... Arrived as reinforcements, the firefighters of Delmas and Tabarre could only contain the fire because of a lack of water, to effectively put out this monstrous fire, the flames had already devoured a good part of the market, reducing hundreds of small businesses to nothing.

At daybreak, in the midst of charred and smoking sheets and a few still active fires that the firefighters made sure to extinguish, against a background of cries of desolation and despair, several dozen merchants devastated by the tragedy, having for the most part lost everything, were desperately trying to recover some products that the fire had miraculously spared.

According to initial assessments, the damage and losses are considerable and most of the tradespeople affected, are in debt and have lost everything and are urgently requesting State aid to restart their trade and repay their loans...

Most of the space in front of the church where coal and food products are sold, among other things, is now only ashes...

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, but fortunately no loss of life has been reported so far.
