Haiti - Insecurity : «The crisis in Haiti threatens the security of the Caribbean» dixit Guterres

Monday, May 15, 2023, António Guterres the Secretary General of the United Nations during a joint press conference with the Jamaican Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, at the end of their closed-door meeting declared "the current crisis in Haiti is a threat to the security of the entire region and beyond" urging the international community to react accordingly after acknowledging that it has been difficult.

Guterres acknowledged the difficulty of mobilizing the international community to deal with the crisis that Haiti is going through through a proposal to form an international police force to put an end to armed gangs and support a political process that wins the recognition of all.

"It was a difficult exercise. It was difficult to mobilize the will of those who would have the best capacities to carry out this operation. It was also difficult to create the political conditions to make it easier for the different countries to agree to take part in this intervention," said António Guterres, UN Secretary General.

UN Secretary General António Guterres, who expressed his support for Jamaican initiatives, thanked Holness for Jamaica being the first country to "immediately express its willingness to participate in this operation" https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-38757-haiti-flash-jamaica-ready-to-deploy-soldiers-and-police-in-haiti.html , as well as for its contribution to a political process "which tries to bring together the different actors to find a way out of this political crisis."

"I want, once again, to ask the international community to understand that effective solidarity with Haiti is not just a question of generosity, it is essentially a question of intelligent self-interest, because the current situation in Haiti reflects a threat to the security of the entire region and beyond," António Guterres said after pledging Jamaica's "strong defense" that the international community "would recognize the success of its efforts."

Guterres said Haiti "finds itself in a very tragic situation," in which the political system is crippled, levels of gang violence "are absolutely terrible" and humanitarian needs are "dramatic".

The UN Secretary General also stressed that it is "necessary to find a political path that allows the recognition of a legitimate government to confront gang violence."

In this sense, he explained that he made a proposal to the UN Security Council to support Haiti with "the presence of a robust international police force to put an end to gangs and, in parallel, democratize the political process."

For his part, Holness is convinced that requests for aid to Haiti do not fall on deaf ears "The question is the pace of action and the countries that want to help will also want to be sure that there is has an ongoing political process that can produce a post-crisis end result."
