Haiti - Agriculture : Creation of 50 new «Peasant Field Schools» in 3 communes of Nippes

As part of the "Resilient Productive Territories" (TPR) project financed by the World Bank, the Ministries of Agriculture and the Environment have created a network of fifty "Peasant Field Schools" (CEP) in three communes of the department of Nippes (Anse-à-Veau, Petite-Rivière des Nippes and Paillant).

These CEPs are practical learning spaces, allowing local farmers to acquire skills on the technical itineraries for different market gardening species, from soil preparation to harvest.

"These spaces teach modern and efficient agricultural techniques to farmers such as production techniques, water management, soil conservation etc... with the sole aim of improving their yield and productivity, while reducing the costs of production," explained Jean Barnabé Bellanton, technical assistant at the Center for International Studies and Cooperation (CECI), body for implementing CEPs and supporting farmers.

Modern agricultural techniques used for vegetable species such as improved seeds, organic fertilizers and efficient irrigation methods, have enabled beneficiary farmers to face environmental challenges and increase the production of vegetable crops and improve quality. of their harvest. Among the market gardening species cultivated at the CEP level, let's mention among others : eggplant, pepper, leek, carrot and pepper.

"The CEPs are key elements of the 'Resilient Productive Territories' project, for the promotion of sustainable agriculture and the resilience of local farming communities," says agricultural engineer Jean Gardy Lochard, infrastructure specialist at the TPR.

The "Resilient Productive Territories" project is in its second phase called "regular phase" which will continue over a period of 4 years.
