Haiti - Education : The Ministry tackles the problem of displaced students and teachers

As part of the initiatives to prepare for integration into school and manage the 2023-2024 school year, and especially to find solutions on the files of schools that use temporary places for displaced people in the metropolitan area of Port-in Prince and other localities of the country for reasons of insecurity, the Ministry of National Education has set up a Commission to work on the registers of schools that serve as temporary shelters and to identify displaced students and teachers and manage the implications of this file in the education system.

This Commission, which includes the technical direction and the departmental direction of the Ministry, must investigate and report on the number of displaced students and teachers and the number of schools that serve as temporary shelters. This Commission must make proposals to find alternatives to allow the resumption of school activities in school centers that serve as temporary shelters.

For now, the Ministry has identified 12 schools that serve as temporary shelters in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince. 8 of them are public schools. This already means that around 150 classrooms are at risk of being added to those that will not be available to join the school on September 11...
