Haiti - Insecurity : Assassination of Professor Solon Fortunat (reactions)

Ministry of National Education :

"The Ministry of National Education (MENFP) learned with shock and dismay the sad news of the death of Solon Fortunat, professor of Mathematics and Physics at the École Normale Supérieure (ENS), at the Faculty of Sciences and at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of the State University of Haiti (UEH), shot dead this week in disturbing circumstances, in the vicinity of Carrefour Péan in Port-au-Prince.

The MENFP condemns with the utmost rigor the assassination of this emeritus teacher who marked several generations of students, particularly at the ENS.

Known for his knowledge, his know-how, his wisdom and his interpersonal skills, Solon Fortunat is one of those model teachers who have marked the history of the ENS and the Faculty of Sciences by leaving indelible traces on their professional career.

This is a great loss for the university community. This revolting act must raise awareness among many about the growing degree of gratuitous violence against citizens, mourning and affecting the educational community and Haitian families.

The Ministry salutes the memory of Professor Fortunat and will long remember his commitment to promoting university research and his availability to supervise UEH students.

The Ministry extends its sympathies to his family, loved ones, students, and the university community."

Rectorate of the State University of Haiti :

"The Rectorate of the State University of Haiti (UEH) learned with pain, dismay and frustration the news of the assassination of Professor Solon FORTUNAT which occurred on Wednesday September 6, 2023 in the Carrefour Péan area. [...] His death comes only a few days after his ex-wife was kidnapped.

The Rectorate of the UEH denounces and condemns this heinous crime against the person of Professor Fortunat. The assassination of the latter is a great loss for the UEH. Once again, the widespread insecurity experienced by the country is knocking on the door of the university. And unfortunately, we do not know when this faucet of blood flowing freely will stop.

The Rectorate salutes the departure for the afterlife of this eminent career teacher who trained several generations of students at UEH. He takes the opportunity to express his heartfelt condolences to his family, his fellow professors, his friends, the communities of the ENS, the FDS and the FAMV in particular, the entire university community in general and anyone affected by this tragic murder [...]"

National Association of Independent Normaliens :

"The National Association of Independent Normaliens (ANNIH) condemns the assassination of Professor Solon Montunat. He was killed by armed bandits in Carrefour Péan, in downtown Port-au-Prince. It is a huge loss for the UEH and all of society, deplores the secretary general of the ANNIH, Jackson Germain."
