Haiti - Security : Suriname ready to send police and soldiers to Haiti

Sunday April 5, 2024, the President of Suriname, Chan Santokhi, announced that his Government was ready to send soldiers and police officers to Haiti to assist the Multinational Security Support Mission (MMSS) in support of the National Police of Haiti (PNH) in its fight against armed gangs "We will support our sister Nation in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). We will support the Kenyan-led multinational force, among other things."

According to Santokhi this contingent is prepared by the Ministers of Defense and Police, and the Minister of Justice, in collaboration with the police and the National Army of Suriname.

He said the officers who will be chosen to be part of the Surinamese contingent will have to be prepared and will not necessarily be members of Suriname's security agencies "We will not just send our people [...] Do you know how many people die every day in Haiti ?" Questions President Santokhi, estimating "that [...] more civilians die every day in Haiti than in the war between Russia and Ukraine [...]"

As a result, he called for CARICOM member countries to show greater solidarity with Haiti.
