Haiti - Social : $60 million for the management of major natural hazards

The World Bank Board of Directors has approved Thursday, for the year 2012, an amount of USD$60 million for a project of major natural hazards management in Haiti. This project will help Haiti to improve its response capacity to this type of events and enhance the resiliency of critical transport infrastructure. Haiti ranks as one of the countries with the highest exposure to multiple natural hazards, with 96 percent of its population living at risk.

This project will further strengthen the country's capacity for disaster preparedness and response through the following activities :

  • Support the National Disaster Risk Management by strengthening the national network of civil protection committees, setting up a reliable emergency communications system, and expanding the national emergency shelter network.

  • Strengthen the capacity of key ministries to integrate knowledge on major natural hazards risk in policy and decision making processes.

  • Rehabilitate vulnerable and damaged critical transport infrastructure.
