Haiti - Education: 1,400 teachers in training for the 4 new fundamental school subjects

This week, the Ministry of Education launched a three-day training session on the four new primary school subjects at the National School of the Republic of Guatemala in Pétion-ville. 1,400 teachers from public and private schools in 16 school districts of the Departmental Directorate of Education of the West (DDEO) are participating in this training session, which took place at eight locations in Grand-Goâve, Carrefour, Delmas, Pétion-ville, Tabarre, Santo, Archaie, and Anse-à-Galets.

Augustin Antoine, the Minister of Education, visited Horatius Laventure High School, one of the training sites for these four new subjects. This provided the Minister with an opportunity to reiterate the importance of these four subjects : Teaching Technology and Productive Activities Education (ETAP), Aesthetic and Artistic Education (EEA), Physical and Sports Education (EPS), and Citizenship Education (EC).

The Minister encourages all teachers participating in this training session to take it very seriously, as their mission will be to share what they learn with other teachers and begin teaching these subjects in their classrooms.

To ensure that everything runs smoothly, the Minister highlighted the efforts already made by the Directorate of Training and Development and the Directorate of Basic Education to facilitate schools in teaching these four new subjects. The Minister cited the "Programmatic Synthesis" which summarizes what students must learn and what types of skills they must develop during the learning period and the rest of the school year.

In addition to the "Programmatic Synthesis," Kendy Nicolas, Director of Basic Education, also discussed other documents such as the "Methodological Guide," which shows how these subjects should be taught and what these lessons should be based on, and the "Activity Sheets," which present a series of activities that students must complete to consolidate their learning.

He advised teachers to use model exam texts related to these new subjects at the end of the school year to assess students. These texts can be downloaded from the Ministry's website.

After the DDEO, this training workshop will continue to be rolled out in the nine other Departmental Directorates. Initially, the Ministry plans to train approximately 10,000 teachers (1,000 per department).

The 400 teachers and inspectors trained by the Ministry between late December 2024 and early January 2025 will lead training workshops for these 10,000 teachers across the country.
