Haiti - Agriculture : Training seminar to strengthen the fishing industry

As part of the Agricultural and Fisheries Productivity Support and Rural Infrastructure Improvement Program for Market Access (PAPAIR), the Ministry of Agriculture, through its components 2 (organizational strengthening and support for fishermen's productivity) and 4 (rehabilitation of fishing infrastructure to improve market access), held a six-day training seminar at the end of May on the processing, preservation, and transformation of fishery products for fishermen and fish market women in the South.

Improving the efficiency of post-harvest fishing operations, fish preservation, and marketing was the main objective of this seminar, which was attended by 40 fishermen and 80 fish market women. Organized in workshops, this training was conducted in the municipalities of Les Cayes, Les Chardonnières, and Aquin. At the end of this training, participants will have improved their knowledge of quality, hygiene and sanitation principles, and fish preservation. Eighty fish vendors will have mastered the methods of salting, drying, and smoking fish.

These workshops were led by executives from components 2 and 4 of the PAPAIR. Some beneficiaries, including fisheries officers, will be able to replicate this training within their respective associations.

This seminar is part of the Ministry of Agriculture's policy, which aims, among other things, to strengthen the capacities of operators in the fisheries sector. It was funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program (GAFSP).
