Haiti - Geneva : Transition towards the formalization of informal work...

On Tuesday, June 3rd, 2025, the work of the various committees began at the 113th International Labour Conference in Geneva.

Members of the Haitian delegation participated in the Committee on the Application of Standards and the Committee responsible for the General Discussion on Promoting the Transition from Informal to Formal Work. During the latter, Georges Wilbert Franck, Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, reaffirmed, during his speech, the Haitian Government's increased support for the process aimed at promoting the transition to formalization of work in all segments of the Haitian labor market.

The Minister recognized that the Haitian economy is largely dominated by the informal sector, which is a significant source of employment in Haiti.

In his speech, the Minister outlined the measures adopted by the Haitian Government to promote the transition to formalization of work in Haiti. These include, among others: the digitization of the business registration process, subsidies for small and medium-sized enterprises, the creation of a labor intermediation platform, a public employment service, the initiation of the digitization of the work permit granting process, the launch of the process to strengthen labor inspection, the institutionalization of social dialogue, and the strengthening of social protection and promotion mechanisms through procedures for establishing the National Unemployment Insurance Office (ONAC) and mandatory access to professional internships.

Finally, Minister Franck called for commitment from all governments around the world to successfully achieve the transition to the formalization of work, thereby protecting the social and economic rights of all.
