On Saturday, September 20, 2025, Haiti dedicated its meditation and pride to one of its most illustrious sons : the Founding Father of the Nation, General and Emperor Jean-Jacques Dessalines, born on September 20, 1758, in Grande-Rivière du Nord.

Although tragically assassinated on October 17, 1806, at the age of 48, his name, his work, and his sacrifice continue to shine in the collective memory and resonate in the soul of an entire people.

A visionary head of State and the first leader of the independent nation, Jean-Jacques Dessalines proclaimed, on January 1, 1804, the birth of a free and sovereign Republic, the fruit of a heroic and victorious struggle against the chains of slavery and colonial barbarism. Through his unwavering courage and political foresight, he bequeathed to his descendants the most precious of legacies : Haiti, the world's first Black Republic, a universal symbol of freedom and human dignity.

On this day of commemoration, the entire Nation rises to pay tribute to this man whose greatness transcends the centuries. His example still inspires generations today in all areas of national life and reminds each and every one that freedom, won through blood and sacrifice, must be defended with the same ardor.

The spirit of Dessalines remains the flame that lights our collective path. By honoring his memory, the Haitian people reaffirm their unwavering commitment to the ideals of justice, equality, and sovereignty on which our Republic was founded.

On this "Dessalines Day" the Nation bows and proclaims with pride and solemnity : Long live Dessalines, long live free and sovereign Haiti!
